The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle — also known as the Deming Cycle or Shewhart Cycle — is the foundational continuous improvement methodology used by world-class organizations across manufacturing, services, government contracting, and compliance-regulated industries.
Originated by Walter Shewhart in the 1930s and popularized by W. Edwards Deming in the 1950s, PDCA is embedded in ISO 9001:2015, WRAP compliance standards, and Lean/Six Sigma frameworks. It is not a one-time project — it is a permanent operating rhythm for organizations committed to measurable, sustained improvement.
P PLAN
Identify the problem, analyze root causes, set measurable objectives, and design the improvement approach.
